How to Get a Campsite on Santa Rosa Island

The campground on Santa Rosa Island is Water Canyon Campground, tucked into a canyon out of the strong northwest winds, in Channel Islands National Park. Recreation.gov lists it as “Santa Rosa Island.” It has 15 individual sites, each for up to five people, every one with a wind shelter, and the park books them on Recreation.gov up to six months ahead. The island can only be reached by boat, and there are no stores or services.

Two things make Santa Rosa harder than the park’s closer campgrounds. First, the boat: Island Packers says it doesn’t run daily service to Santa Rosa, and the crossing takes two to three hours. Because of the boat schedule, the park says the minimum stay is generally three days. Second, 2026 is a fire year. A wildfire burned nearly forty percent of the island between May 15 and June 4, and the park closed the island to all overnight use through October 13, 2026.

How booking actually works

Step 1: the boat and the site, together. Recreation.gov’s notice says “Visitors are required to arrange transportation to the island before reserving a campsite.” Island Packers says Santa Rosa sites are often full months ahead and suggests checking the campsites before you book the boat. The park’s advice settles it: find dates on which both boat tickets and a campsite are available, then book both. Island Packers says its regular Santa Rosa trips run three times a week in summer and fall, and that its transportation to Santa Rosa usually ends in late November. Your nights have to sit between boat days, which is why the park says the minimum stay is generally three days.

Step 2: the site. Sites open on Recreation.gov up to six months before the night. On October 9, nights were already released into early April 2027, and a few of those April nights were already reserved. Recreation.gov keeps taking reservations right up to your arrival day, but you need one before you get on the boat: there are no walk-ups on the island.

Step 3, unscheduled: cancellations. Recreation.gov’s standard campsite rules apply. Cancel before the day before arrival and you’re refunded minus a $10 service fee; cancel the day before or the day of, and you also lose the first night (a one-night reservation loses everything). A no-show costs $20 plus the first night. Island Packers refunds boat tickets cancelled at least 5 days ahead (14 days for holiday camper trips, per their policy). So a trip that falls apart has every reason to cancel early, and those sites come back onto the calendar at no set time.

The 2026 fire, and what reads “Closed”

The park’s fire recovery page says every Water Canyon Campground reservation through October 13, 2026 was cancelled, and that you can reserve campsites for dates after October 13. Day use resumed July 1. Burned areas stay closed, and that includes the Torrey Pines Trail, Water Canyon upstream from the beach, and a segment of Cherry Canyon Trail near the campground. Backcountry camping in the island’s southeastern quadrant stays closed for the rest of the 2026 season. Drinking water is still available at the campground and in the historic ranch area.

On Recreation.gov, that closure shows up as all 15 sites reading Closed through October 13. After that, three sites (10, 12 and 14) kept reading Closed on most nights through the end of the year when we looked. Nothing official we could find says why, so treat those three as unavailable unless the calendar says otherwise.

What actually sells out (and what doesn’t)

Here’s a real snapshot from October 9, 2026, looking at the next 60 nights.

Weekends go first. After the closure lifts, 5 of the 16 Friday and Saturday nights were completely full, and 9 of the 16 had two or fewer sites left. Sunday through Thursday was far looser: only 2 of 39 weeknights were full.

Late November is the cliff. From November 29 on, not a single site was reserved: twelve sites read Available every night through December 31. That lines up with Island Packers saying its Santa Rosa service usually ends in late November. An empty calendar there most likely means no boat, not a lucky find. Check the boat before you book.

Booked out for your dates? Here’s the play

1. Start from the boat days. Island Packers runs Santa Rosa only a few days a week, so pick dates that start and end on a boat day, then hunt for the site. A site without a boat seat is no use, and a site in December may not have a boat at all.

2. Watch for cancellations. Sites come back at no set time when people cancel, and with a three-day minimum in practice, a cancelled trip often frees several nights at once.

Want to know when a site opens for your nights? Santa Rosa's sites come back when people cancel, on no set schedule. BDH Pro watches the nights you pick, up to 60 days out, and alerts you when at least one site opens for a night you watch. Nights released for the first time are recorded quietly; only later cancellations alert. You book it yourself on Recreation.gov, and your boat with Island Packers.

3. Go midweek. In the snapshot, weeknights had open sites on 37 of 39 nights. Weekends were the bottleneck.

4. Keep the stay boat-shaped. You can hold up to 7 consecutive nights, but the stay has to match a boat out and a boat back. A trip that fits the boat calendar is easier to fit into whatever comes back.

5. Have a fallback island. If Santa Rosa won’t line up, Scorpion Canyon on Santa Cruz Island is the park’s other campground with drinking water.

The mistakes that keep people out

What we can’t tell you: a cancelled boat

If Island Packers cancels your crossing for weather, their policy offers a full refund or rescheduling of the boat ticket, and says they do not cover costs associated with accommodations. Neither the park nor Recreation.gov publishes a specific rule for what happens to your campsite reservation in that case. Don’t assume a refund: contact Recreation.gov.

You’ve got the site. Now build the pack.

Santa Rosa asks a lot of a pack: a tent that holds in 30-knot wind, food for two extra nights in the rough months, 60 pounds per person on the boat with no single item over 45, and 1.5 miles of carrying at each end. That’s what the BigDirtyHikes pack builder is for: build your Santa Rosa Island pack, watch the weight total as you add gear, and reuse your gear closet trip after trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is Santa Rosa Island camping open after the 2026 fire? The park closed the island to all overnight use through October 13, 2026 and cancelled campground reservations through that date. Campsites at Water Canyon can be reserved for dates after October 13. Burned areas, including some trails near the campground, stay closed during recovery.

How far in advance can I reserve Water Canyon Campground on Santa Rosa Island? Up to six months in advance on Recreation.gov. Recreation.gov asks you to arrange your transportation before you reserve the site, and Island Packers doesn’t sail to Santa Rosa every day, so look for dates where both the boat and a site are available.

How much does it cost to camp on Santa Rosa Island? $15 per site per night, for up to 5 people. A party can hold at most 2 sites. The boat is a separate ticket from Island Packers.

How far is the campground from the boat landing? A flat 1.5 miles from the pier at Bechers Bay, and you carry all your own gear. The campground is about a quarter mile from Water Canyon Beach.

Is there water at the Santa Rosa Island campground? Yes. Drinking water, toilets, a picnic table, a food storage box and a wind shelter are provided at the campground. There are no stores or services, and campfires are not allowed.

Can I camp on Santa Rosa Island in December? The sites can be reserved, but Island Packers says its transportation to Santa Rosa usually ends in late November. Without a private boat or another way out, check for a boat before you book the site.

Everything is booked for my dates. Am I done? Not necessarily. Sites come back when people cancel, and Recreation.gov takes reservations up to your arrival day. Weeknights open up far more often than weekends. You still need a boat seat for the same dates.
